The history of the tobacco industry in Israel begin in 1921. Previously, the tobacco monopoly was by the Ottoman administration. Growth prohibited without any permission and the price was determined by the Otomans that nominated special supervisors for that.
In 1921, after the British mandate replaced the Turkish regime, tobacco monopoly was abolished, and decided of consolidated tax of 35 e"p (Egyptian Piaster) per 1 kg of imported tobacco. This move created a significant increase of growing and import tobacco to Israel.
In 1923 the first cigarette factory in Israel - 'Ariel' was established.
